Growing Aspirations to reach Potential

Pupil Premium Plus

Pupil Premium Plus is a government grant available to support and promote the education of children and young people in care. It is available for all school aged children from reception to year 11.

Within Cheshire West and Chester, Pupil Premium Plus must be used to improve outcomes and raise attainment. The Virtual School Head Teacher has overall responsibility for making sure there are effective arrangements in place for allocating Pupil Premium Plus.

Cheshire West and Chester allocate Pupil Premium Plus funding on a needs lead basis. Therefore, the amount of funding an individual child may receive can vary.

Pupil Premium Plus and Personal Education Plans
Within Cheshire West and Chester Pupil Premium Plus will only be provided if a high quality PEP clearly identifies educational and other measurable targets for improvement for the young person.

As such, any request for Pupil Premium Plus must be linked to ‘SMART’ targets on the PEP.

The Pupil Premium Plus will be used to improve outcomes for children in the following areas:

  • raised levels of achievement and progress
  • improving attendance
  • supporting emotional wellbeing
  • promoting inclusion (by reducing internal and external exclusion)
  • developing social skills
  • supporting a smooth transition into the next key stage or new place of learning

The Pupil Premium Plus request on the PEP will show they type of intervention (pastoral or learning), description of intervention, target details, expected impact and cost of the support.

For more information on how to apply for Pupil Premium Plus please take a look at our example PEP forms or speak to one of our education advisers.

When will Pupil Premium Plus not be allocated?
Pupil Premium Plus will not be used to double fund or replace funding which should have already been allocated to the school to support the child e.g.

  • to fund services that should be provided via an Education, Health and Care Plan
  • a statutory assessment or support from health services
  • the interventions put in place that do not require any funding
  • the school’s own funding covers the cost of the interventions
