SMART Targets

SMART targets are used on the PEP form to help outline how the people involved in a young person’s life are going to assist them in reaching their educational outcomes.

What is a ‘SMART’ target?
When discussing a young person’s education always think, is it clear what needs to happen for the target to be achieved and will the young person understand this target?

For a target to be ‘SMART’ it needs to be 

Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

Please consider:

1. What the child/young person needs to achieve to ensure progress and reach the next step, sub level or grade? Please give specific examples such as evidencing specific knowledge/understanding, demonstrating a certain skill or applying a process.
2. How will the progress be measured?
3. What support/provision will be in place to facilitate this progress and promote attainment?
4. Is the target relevant to the child/young person’s development?
5. Is this target achievable in the term?

For example:

“To improve my reading age” should become “I will be able to blend phonemes in words like string and catch.”

Or

“To learn the characters, plot and theme of Macbeth” should become “To learn key quotations for Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Macduff to justify your understanding of the main characters.”
